POL001 - Decontamination Policy (Manikins)
v1.0 - 1st January 2025
Purpose
- To prevent the spread of infection through cardiopulmonary resuscitation practice on resuscitation manikins.
- To provide an aesthetically acceptable piece of equipment for student practice.
- To preserve the life span of resuscitation manikins.
It is the responsibility of the lead instructor for each course to ensure that all manikins and manikin mouth/nose and faces are clean before and after use. Disposable gloves are to be worn during the cleaning process.
Manikin Hygiene
- Students must be assured and feel confident that the resuscitation manikin which they are about to use are clean.
- Instructors will make provision for the cleaning of manikins between students with Bioguard 70% Alcohol Surface Wipes.
- Instructors will make provision for the cleaning of manikins before and after training and between trainees with Bioguard Hard Surface wipes.
- Manikin Airways - Laerdal manikins have a one-way-valve in the airway that sits behind the face mask.
- The valve redirects expired air from the manikin’s lungs out of the back of the head, preventing contamination exiting the mouth towards the learner. Little Anne airways are to be replaced after every course or the one-way valve may fail and unacceptable contamination can build up. >> Video guidance to replace Little Anne lungs
- Manikin Faces - Laerdal manikins have removable faces, after each course these must be sanitised by any of the following:
- Soaking in 70°C hot water with a small amount of washing up liquid for 20 mins;
- Soaking in mild bleach solution (e.g. 100ml domestic bleach in 5 litres water) for 20 mins then rinse thoroughly with warm water;
- Placing in the dishwasher (using dishwashing powder/tabs) on a 70°C cycle.
- Scrubbing with cleaning disinfection wipes (see above)
- Each manikin has a unique identification number and there is a record kept when each manikin is cleaned after use and before storage if not in regular use.
Manikin Maintenance
- Instructors and whoever maintains the manikins will thoroughly follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and provisions for the hygienic use, maintenance and storage.
- This includes ensuring that the equipment is in good condition, replacing consumable and defective items (as necessary).
- >> Manufactures maintenance guidelines
Disposal
- All disposable lung bags, wipes, tissues and gloves are disposed of via general waste streams.
